Visitors on the Antarctic Plateau

HANOVER, NEW HAMPSHIRE– In the middle of our traverse, we had the rather surreal experience of being visited by a French film crew making a documentary about research work in Antarctica. The crew flew in on a Basler, the somewhat debatable name of the converted DC-3 aircraft commonly used in Antarctica. Not only were these the only “new” people we’d seen in a long time, but the arrival of a plane, with it’s promise of transport back to the “real” world was enticing. A quick head count assured that none of our group had snuck on board, and meant we were all in it for the long, long haul back to Troll. Even better, the Basler pilot left us with a bit of a treat.
