Mattias Cape is a PhD student from Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UCSD working with Maria Vernet on the LARISSA project. This will be his third cruise to the Antarctic Peninsula, and his first to the Weddell Sea. He is interested in how changes in the physical and chemical properties of Antarctic marine ecosystems, including sea ice, affect the food web. On this cruise he will be exploring growth dynamics of phytoplankton in the Larsen B embayment and looking for clues as to how the phytoplankton community might have changed since the breakup of the ice shelf. He is looking forward to going back to this amazing part of the world and sharing his travel and research through pictures and stories from the ?eld.
