Camp Winter

CAMP WINTER, ANTARCTICA-- What can I say about a place named Camp Winter? Of all names, it is appropriate: desolate, cold and windy. It's mind boggling sometimes to think how remote we are, the eight of us, and what minimal buffer we have between us and the vast, cold ice sheet... {Read More »}

The Courage to Question

OFFSHORE NEW HARBOR CAMP, ANTARCTICA-- There’s something weird about staking bamboo flags into Antarctic sea ice. Plunging the remnants of a regal plant into an environment so different from its own rings untrue. The natural wonder of bamboo’s fortitude against majestic Antarctic landscapes gives me pause. Two Kiwi Drillers

OFFSHORE NEW HARBOR CAMP, ANTARCTICA-- To me the cornerstone of any true friendship is the belief in someone’s integrity. Sometimes I will go years without gaining a true friend. Other times, I’ll just get lucky and stumble upon a few God-sent souls that say what they mean... {Read More »}

Arriving on the Southernmost Continent

MCMURDO STATION, ANTARCTICA-- (By Ron Hipschman) Five hours after boarding our flight in Christchurch, New Zealand, the intrepid Exploratorium crew arrives on the southern-most continent. As soon as the aircraft door opens and we feel the chill of the polar air... {Read More »}

In the Cockpit

MCMURDO STATION, ANTARCTICA-- (By Mary Miller) My dad used to fly in Antarctica in the 1970s. In this video dispatch, I go up to the cockpit of the same type of plane as we fly above the icy continent... {Read More »}
